Reflection:
Discriminating women in the Latino community has been going on for many years now. The reason is because men pass down the belief of “machismo” down the line as a good thing. Sexism starts off as discrimination only but usually results as physical violence. This physical violence can even lead to death. This is one of the reasons why this is a negative issue in the Latino culture.
Witnessing sexism in my household was a very common thing. This issue was able to realize all the struggles both my grandmother and mother went through and to open the eyes of many in the family. My grandfather would brutally during their marriage. What is surprising is that my grandmother stated, “your great grandfather used to hit your great grandmother and you grandpa witnessed it for years” (Catalina Torres, 2012). That sexism in the Latino community is one of the biggest problems in the culture. Many Latinas have changed this here in the United States, but Latinas in Mexico struggle more. It is harder to change things in Mexico because a woman’s voice is absolutely small, and almost nothing. Either way, it is a slow process to change this issue of sexism. In the end this issue will have a hard time being resolved because of the clash of beliefs we all have on this belief. Some argue it is only culture, while others argue it is an issue of the culture.
