Introduction:
Our rhetorical analysis project basically identified how a website, portrayed ethos, pathos, and logos. Robert, Sam, Roberto, and I decided to analyze the mlb.com website (mlb.com, 2012). We chose this website because we knew that it would definitely address each of the rhetorical devices through its’ visual set up, colors, and text. This project allowed us to explain how and why these rhetorical devices were included in the mlb.com website (mlb.com, 2012).
The Major League Baseball website is basically the home page of all the baseball teams. It updates news, photos, standings, schedules, player profiles, videos, and stats of the entire League. It is always up to date since many fans check it daily. The website lets you access the online shop, the mlb.tv, the fantasy baseball teams, visit individual team websites, and allows you to purchase game tickets (mlb.tv, 2012). If you choose to go into an individual team’s website it has the same features, but of course its’ information is focused mainly on the specific team. The Major Baseball League website is easy to use.
Our presentation was focused mainly on the Red Sox website. We presented by we splitting it into four sections. First, Sam introduced the website and explained how to navigate the website page. She also explained where you could find certain information and how to find the team’s individual websites. Next, I identified the pathos behind the website, through the use of color, text, and visual representation. Roberto then explained the use of ethos in the website, and Robert presented the use of logos at the end of the presentation.

EthosEthos shows the credibility of a subject, and in this case it presented the credibility of mlb.com (mlb.com, 2012). Ethos was portrayed through the credibility to social networks, the news and headlines, blogs, photos, the boys and girls club. First of all, the social networks were made to be eye-catching so that its’ audience can easily connect with the baseball teams through Twitter, Facebook, and other social networks. The news and headlines are constantly being updated which shows that this website can be trusted. Photos and the boys and girls club also show the credibility because it helps us see that his website is in contact with each of the teams which reinforces the fact that the website is reliable and provides information about the teams’ involvement with the community. The Major Baseball League website also has the “all rights reserved” label which mainly shows that this website can be trusted.

LogosLogos is the logical information that was posted in the Major Baseball League website. This information must always be updated, because it must be a reliable source for the fans. It consists of the statistics of each player and team, the scores of games, and also the game schedules. The logos helps keep the audience of the website interested because it contains correct facts and proves that it is reliable through the information posted.

PathosThe pathos of the website, are the elements of the website that appeals to its’ audiences’ feelings. For example, the scores of the games are constantly posted on the website which can either upset the audience or make them happy. Another example would be injury notifications because it touches the readers’ feelings. Sometimes really good players might get injured and may not be able to play in the next game, which also affects the emotions of baseball fans. Also, this year the Red Sox were celebrating their hundred-year anniversary. The Red Sox web page’s background was made up of old photos of retired players and new photos of current players. This might have brought back memories to the retired players, and current players bringing emotions as well. It brought pride and joy to its’ players and fans as well. This rhetorical device helps the audience feel understood, making the website likable enough to keep visiting.

Summary:
Ethos, pathos, and logos benefitted the Major Baseball League website. It made mlb.com likable, trustworthy, and accurate (mlb.com, 2012). It still continues promoting its’ teams, merchandise, and will continue updating valuable information about the league with the use of these persuasive tools. Therefore, the website remains popular, visited, and supported by thousands of people.
Presenting the rhetorical analysis of a website was a new experience for me, but I really liked it. I believe everyone did really well even though we didn’t rehearse before. The only thing that made this project difficult was just to split up the presentation in a very interesting way. We decided to use PowerPoint presentation, but I feel we could have chosen something a bit more creative. My group’s presentation was set up mostly in a visual way, so if I could change anything on my presentation it would be to include a little more information on the PowerPoint. Also, I would have probably created a Prezi presentation so it would appeal more creative and unique to my audience. Finally, I would rehearse it before, so I would sound confident in front of the class during my presentation.
