Importance:
Discrimination is important, because this occurs in many places. It occurs in homes, education, and even in jobs. Maria Chavez, the author of Latina Struggles, expresses her frustration towards the sexism that occurs constantly in her job (Chavez, 2012). She states, “Men often get the limelight, but women do the work” (Chavez, 2012). Maria explains that even if a woman were the hardest worker there, the employers still would overlook her just because of her sex. Also, the article Sexism in the Workplace states that women do not get paid equally. Men get paid more money in their jobs than women do. This occurs even if they both have the exact same position and job. Women also have a tough time getting higher positions in their jobs because the people who make the decisions are usually looking for a man to obtain the position. It is a fact that less than five percent of women hold senior positions in their jobs. They explain that the reason why women get paid less is because they most likely leave their jobs because they have to talk care of their children, and take a leave of absence due to a pregnancy. This shows that people think of children, and how it’s a woman’s job to take care of them as soon as they see woman.
As previously stated, sexism is said to occur in educational community. For example, at the University of Texas at El Paso the majority of the Engineering Academic Program consists of men. Usually women are also overlooked, due to the Professors’ belief of men being smarter than women. Usually this has no one to blame since El Paso has a large population of Latinos.
While I interviewed Catalina Torres she says that she experienced sexism her whole life (Catalina Torres, 2012). She says that she was unfortunately beat constantly by her husband because he was an alcoholic. She says she didn’t do anything because she was terrified and because back then the Police Department could not do anything about it. According to the “Hispanic Family and Male- Female Relationships: An Overview”, Hispanic relationships are unequal and that men are dominant in the relationship (Galanti, 2002). Geri-Ann states that there is a high percent of a chance that there is sexism in a Hispanic relationship. Galanti explains that in a Hispanic culture, the relationship is unequal. The role of the woman is to be a mother, while the role of the man is to provide and to be the decisions. The relationship is also described to have some negative affects, due to excessive drinking, which occur in the Latino Community.
