Being raised in a Latino Community can be a tough experience for any woman. The reason why I believe it is a tough job is because of all the expectations that the culture holds for a woman. A Latina woman is overall expected to be an excellent housewife. Also, the male is usually dominant in the relationship and is the one who is expected to earn the money as well as to manage it. The bad side to this is that women are usually expected to not work even if they most probably want to. Also, men tend to raise their children to believe that men have to basically show no emotion. They say women are the only ones who should show emotions.
Sexism is most likely to occur in the Latino Community. In my experience, I have seen it happen my whole life. As a child, I saw both my father and grandfather’s “machismo” side. It is not something a person wants to see, but unfortunately I did. My grandfather was an alcoholic that physically hurt my grandmother in the first few years of their marriage. My father was the same. This has really opened my eyes to the Sexism that has been carried down the line in the culture. I strongly believe that this Sexism in the Latino Community is not a good thing. It causes many bad side affects for a woman mentally, and physically.
A woman in the presence of Sexism most likely ends up being in an abusive relationship, or ends up having mental health problems. These mental health problems consist mostly of depression and low self-esteem problems. It isn’t correct that women have health problems due to the treatment of men.
Another reason why I believe we should change this is because this Sexism has also been carried into jobs, education, and other public places. Women get discriminated constantly. They usually are overlooked leaving women to have fewer opportunities in life.
Getting rid of this problem is really difficult. The reason is because people in the Latino Community were raised to believe Sexism is okay. Then those people raise their children to believe the same thing. It is a chain that is hard to break, but it can be done if we all came together to fight this problem. Of course, Sexism has gotten better. Hopefully over the years it will continue to get better, and maybe one day it won’t be a big problem in the Latino Community like it is today.
