Impact
Sexism in the community is argued to cause negative effects on the victims. In the Hispanic Women and Mental Health article, Hortensia Amaro states that the women end up having health issues in the presence of the sexism. Amaro writes that women mainly go through depression and never treat it, and that in fact women do not even notice due to the lack of knowledge and due to the fact that they cannot pay for the expenses (Amaro, 1987). This means that many women lived with bad health issues without even getting them treated. This was a bad situation that women chose to be living in.
Women did begin to get well informed about this specific issue, and they started to speak up for themselves. They have developed programs where can help one another get passed this issue together, which has been a great help to many of them. Change has occurred over the years. Women have started to get better positions in jobs, and have had better experiences in their education community. For example, the chart below shows how the percentage of women’s occupations has increased over the years.
The percentages would not have been high years ago, but since women began to stand up for themselves they accomplished many of the struggles they faced in their everyday life.
